Message from Rick Porth
President, United Way of Connecticut

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a time when the Department of Homeland Security works to increase public awareness about emergency preparedness. This year, National Preparedness Month focuses on encouraging individuals, families and communities to get an Emergency Supply Kit; make a Family Emergency Plan; get informed about emergencies and their appropriate responses; and participate in emergency volunteer efforts. United Way 2-1-1 maintains up-to-date information on emergency preparedness resources. For information dial 2-1-1 or click here.

H1N1 Update

The State Department of Public Health is registering Connecticut physicians and other health care providers to receive the H1N1 vaccine as soon as the federal government makes it available. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) anticipates distributing the vaccine by mid-fall. Those at increased risk for serious illness include: pregnant women, people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age, health care and emergency services personnel with direct patient contact, children 6 months through 4 years of age, and children 5 through 18 years of age with chronic medical conditions. The State has had more than 1,900 confirmed cases of H1N1 and 9 deaths. The 9 people who died had underlying medical conditions. Visit http://www.211ct.org for the latest H1N1 information.
