Introductory Message from Rick

CEOIt is my privilege to begin my tenure as President and CEO of the United Way of Connecticut. We are in the midst of one of the most tenuous economic periods in recent memory. In this uncertain economic climate, United Way 2-1-1 is uniquely positioned to offer a wide range of assistance to Connecticut's residents. I look forward to building on United Way of Connecticut's considerable strengths and achievements to pursue new opportunities to serve the people of Connecticut.

New and Improved Child Care Search Engine

2-1-1 Child Care is introducing a new way to help residents find child care. Visit 2-1-1 Child Care and try out our new user-friendly search engine. The search engine allows people to narrow their search for child care by including a variety of options like location, program type, hours, type of care, fees, accreditation status and special needs experience. Our website will also provide links to valuable child care consumer education information to assist in assessing and selecting the program that best meets the needs of the family.

Calls for Basic Needs on the Rise
In the midst of the current economic crisis, United Way 2-1-1 is experiencing a marked increase in calls for information related to basic needs. Calls categorized as Basic Needs include those concerning housing, food, utility and financial assistance, transportation and more. In September 2008, 2-1-1 received over 18,000 requests for information related to basic needs, a 46 percent increase over September 2007. Rocky Hill made 37 requests. Statewide, two-thirds of basic needs' requests categorized as basic needs are related to utility assistance, food, and financial assistance. 2-1-1 fielded over 7,000 requests for utility assistance alone this September compared to 2,700 in September 2007.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October marked the 21st anniversary of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Vigils, walks and forums were held around the state to raise awareness. A forum at the State's Legislative Office Building focused on the lack of, and need for, 24 hour staffing at local domestic violence shelters. So far this year, 2-1-1 has received close to 3,000 calls from residents looking for information about domestic violence hotlines, shelters, support groups or intervention options.
