CEOUnited Way 2-1-1’s Health Care Resource Guide is a valuable tool that provides up-to-date information on state, federal and privately purchased health insurance programs for Connecticut residents. The guide contains information about how to obtain health care when you are uninsured, ineligible for state and federal programs, or unable to pay for the cost of care. In these difficult economic times, this resource guide can help residents sort out their options for accessing health care in Connecticut.

New Federal Poverty Guidelines

New Federal Poverty Guidelines have been issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and will go into effect on April 1. The guidelines are used to determine income eligibility for many local, state, and federal programs. Programs using the guidelines include SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps), HUSKY, ConnPACE, Head Start and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

2-1-1 Barometer: Financial Security

United Way 2-1-1 handled over 160,000 requests for services in 2008 that dealt with issues of financial security, including utility and heating assistance, food, employment assistance, housing, and financial assistance. This information is documented in the latest edition of the 2-1-1 Barometer: Financial Security. This edition reviews Connecticut’s current economic condition, calls to 2-1-1 for financial assistance and United Way programs that are in place to provide help. The 2-1-1 Barometer is published several times each year utilizing 2-1-1 call data and other information to explore issues affecting Connecticut residents.

Census to Begin Canvassing Neighborhoods

In preparation for the 2010 U.S. Census, census workers will canvas neighborhoods in communities in Connecticut and around the nation to update its address list. State residents may see canvassers in their neighborhoods reviewing address information beginning in April. The U.S. Department of Commerce, the agency that administers the Census, will begin recruiting census takers in the fall of 2009.
