Message from Rick Porth
President, United Way of Connecticut

CEOUnited Way of Connecticut is partnering with Connecticut Public Television in an initiative aimed at encouraging volunteerism during these difficult economic times and beyond. In June, CPTV will air “The Power of Giving: Stories of Volunteerism”, a documentary featuring profiles of individuals who have committed themselves to on-going volunteer projects. The program will include a Volunteer-A-Thon, allowing viewers to call in to learn about volunteer opportunities in their communities. The Volunteer-A-Thon will highlight and connect people to the volunteer database available through their local United Way. United Way 2-1-1 will provide telephone support during the program and viewers will be encouraged to call 2-1-1 any time after the program airs. For more information on the Power of Giving visit http://www.cptv2.org/powerofgiving/. For information on how your organization can participate, click here.

2-1-1 Barometer: The Mortgage Foreclosure Crisis

In the first quarter of 2009, 1 in every 245 Connecticut households had a mortgage foreclosure filing, giving the state the highest foreclosure rate in New England. While Connecticut’s foreclosure rate declined in the first quarter over the previous quarter, there are signs that it may begin to increase. This edition of the 2-1-1 Barometer highlights the latest data on foreclosures and on calls to 2-1-1 for foreclosure assistance as well as United Way and other programs that are in place to provide help. The 2-1-1 Barometer is published several times each year utilizing 2-1-1 call data and other information to explore issues affecting Connecticut residents. Summer Food Services

Statewide, over 150,000 school age children are eligible to receive free and reduced meals during the school year. Those meal programs end when the school year ends, but the Summer Food Service Program is available to ensure that children in lower-income neighborhoods can continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer. Visit 211ct.org for a list of meal sites.
