Message from Rick Porth
President, United Way of Connecticut

CEOHappy 10th Anniversary 2-1-1!
On February 11, 1999, Connecticut became the first state in the nation to implement a statewide 2-1-1 system and we celebrate its 10th anniversary this month. However, United Way
2-1-1, previously known as Infoline, was established in 1976 with an 800 number and is actually more than 30 years old! 2-1-1 offers a robust resource for state residents and providers alike who are looking for human services referrals. Visit www.211ct.org or dial 2-1-1 to tap into the State’s most comprehensive, continually updated database of human service resources.

New Date for the Digital TV Conversion

The deadline for U.S. television to switch from analog to digital broadcasts has been extended to June 12. The original date for the change was February 17. It was postponed because it was found that millions of Americans were not yet prepared for the shift. Consumers with older televisions that use an antenna will need to get a converter box to be able to use their analog set. For more information go to 2-1-1's elibrary.

Unemployment Resource Guide Updated

As Connecticut’s unemployment rate continues to rise, 2-1-1 is seeing an increase in the number of calls from residents needing referrals for job finding assistance. In 2008, 2-1-1 made over 9,000 referrals related to employment services, an increase of 9 percent over the previous year. Residents from Rocky Hill made 18 requests. 2-1-1 has just updated its report, Where to Turn in Connecticut When you Become Unemployed which offers many resources to those seeking employment, job training and basic needs services while they are unemployed.

Changes to HUSKY Healthcare Underway

The Department of Social Services is providing a new alternative to enrollment in a managed care plan to some HUSKY A members. Primary Care Case Management (PCCM) is now available to current patients of participating physicians in the Willimantic and Waterbury areas. Under PCCM, a patient’s care is coordinated by a primary care provider (PCP) instead of by a managed care plan. When PCCM is chosen, PCPs become responsible for approving and monitoring all aspects of a patient’s care. For more information visit http://www.ctunitedway.org/husky.html.
