United Way 2-1-1 35 Years and Counting

In the 35 years since Connecticut established a statewide information and referral service, initially called Infoline and now 2-1-1, we have answered millions of calls and helped hundreds of thousands of people find help. Governor Malloy helped us to mark this anniversary with a proclamation declaring February 11 (2-11) as 2-1-1 day in the state of Connecticut. Today, 2-1-1 on average, handles over 350,000 calls per year helping state residents get connected to the health and human services resources they need. Connecticut's 2-1-1 was the first statewide 2-1-1 service in the country and we are proud to provide assistance 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Dial 2-1-1 or visit www.211ct.org for assistance.

Need Income Tax Prep Assistance?

United Way 2-1-1 helps residents get connected to free income tax preparation support by maintaining listings of IRS offices, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites and AARP Tax-Aide Income Tax Assistance sites throughout the state. Callers to 2-1-1 can find out whether they qualify for free income tax preparation help, where to go to get help and what information they need to bring to the site. In some locations, 2-1-1 even schedules appointments to get your tax return prepared. For a listing of all free tax preparation sites, click here.

SNAP Use Up 21%

Nutrition programs like SNAP (Food Stamps) provide a basic safety net to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Sixty-nine percent of eligible households and 35% of eligible senior citizens in CT are currently receiving SNAP. SNAP benefits provide an average of $263 per household and $141 per person per month. In 2010, over 198,000 CT households received SNAP, a 21% increase from the previous year. For information on SNAP benefits dial 2-1-1 or visit the 2-1-1 e-library.

Housing Voucher Program Opens

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV Section 8) has periodic openings for families seeking subsidized housing. UWC maintains the listing of openings and waiting lists for the HCV. New Haven is currently accepting applications for families until February 25. Click here for more information or to register for notification of HCV openings.
