Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between a caring adult and a youth. It is an old concept that works today. From Big Brothers/Big Sisters in the early 1900s to the Eugene Lang "I Have A Dream" program which promises students a college education if they stay in school, mentoring in its many forms has increased in importance in recent years.

Youth who have a mentor are:

  • More likely to complete school and go on to higher education
  • More successful academically
  • 53% less likely to skip school
  • 46% less likely to begin using drugs
  • 33% less likely to become violent

United Way of Connecticut serves on the Advisory Committee of the Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, a program of the Governor's Prevention partnership. CMP in conjunction with 2-1-1 has developed a database of accredited mentoring programs, in schools, businesses, churches and other community based programs. Mentors are referred to appropriate programs for their geographic location and particular interest.
